At Mademoiselle Organic, we love showing communities how simple, fun, and empowering it can be to live with less waste. That’s why we were delighted to be invited by Maroondah City Council to run Plastic Free July DIY workshops—and not just one, but two fully booked sessions focused on making solid shampoo bars using natural, biodegradable ingredients.
These hands-on workshops were part of Maroondah’s commitment to supporting zero waste council events in Victoria, and we were thrilled to return after last year’s equally successful deodorant-making workshop. It’s inspiring to see how much momentum the Plastic Free July initiative has gained and how many people are eager to learn practical ways to reduce single-use plastic in their daily lives.
A Local, DIY Approach to Plastic-Free Living
Our Plastic Free July DIY workshops offered participants a unique opportunity to learn how to make their own shampoo bars—a practical and eco-friendly alternative to plastic shampoo bottles that often end up in landfill. Each participant made their own custom shampoo bar using gentle, skin- and scalp-friendly ingredients that are kind to both people and the planet. They also took home a reusable mould and a detailed recipe sheet so they could confidently continue crafting their own shampoo bars at home.
The workshops were designed to be accessible for all skill levels, providing clear step-by-step instructions and plenty of hands-on guidance. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive:
“Quick, easy and fun to do!”
“Love how natural and simple the ingredients are.”
“I never knew it was that easy to make shampoo!”
We were especially delighted to welcome back some familiar faces—participants from last year’s deodorant workshop who shared that they still love using the natural deodorant they made with us!
Why Zero-Waste Plastic-Free July Workshops Matter
Workshops like these go beyond just crafting a product—they help empower communities with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make sustainable choices every day. At a time when more people are searching for Plastic Free July activities and eco alternatives, practical workshops like ours play a crucial role in turning good intentions into meaningful action.
Participants often tell us:
“Everyone can benefit from using DIY natural products.”
“Great way to reduce plastic use—and it’s fun!”
By learning to make their own products, attendees take control over what goes on their bodies and contribute to reducing the huge amounts of plastic packaging in circulation.
